Autumn 2 week 3
The challenge: BODY SCIENCE
The Science behind it:
Our bodies are organised into systems. The circulatory system includes our heart and blood vessels. The lungs are part of our respiratory system. The digestive system includes the intestine and the stomach which his connected to the mouth via the oesophagus. The skeletal system includes bones, muscles, and tendons.
Everybody is different and you will find variation between individuals and notice differences between adults and children but did you know generally; your arm span is roughly the same as your height, the circumference of your head is 3 times bigger than your foot and your height is 5 times the length of your thigh?
You will need:
String
An adult to help you measure
Instructions:
- Use the string to measure your arm span (from longest finger to longest finger with your arms outstretched). Now, keeping this length marked see if this is the same, or similar, to your height.
- Measure the circumference of your head. Keeping the length marked on the string how many lengths of your foot can you fit along that section of string. Science tells us it should be about 3.
- Finally, measure your thigh then check how many of your thigh lengths you need to make your full height. Science tells us it should be about 5.
Questions:
Did the measurements work out for you?
they work for an adult and a child?
Who has the widest arm span in your family?
Who has the widest hand span?
Can you find any body facts of your own?
Happy investigating! Remember to send pictures of your measuring to deputy@charlesdarwin.cheshire.sch.uk
