Refugee Week - Drama
Lesson: Communication, Language and Listening
Class: Year 1 Year: 2018 - 2019
Last week the whole of Charles Darwin learnt more about refugees as part of Refugee Week. Some year groups used drama to get an understanding of how it feels to be a refugee.
Year 1 had the experience of speaking in 'grammelot', which is gibberish language and had to try and communciate something to another child who couldn't speak their language. The children soon realised how difficult it was to try and communciate with someone who couldn't speak their language.
The children discussed in groups what they thought they would pack if they were refugees.
Year 3 packed their own refugee bags and had to talk to others about what they had chosen and why. They also performed hot seating where they interviewed soemone in the role as a refugee. This enabled the children to express what they understood about being a refugee.
In drama club the children were given different scenarios invovling refugees and they asked to perform what they could do in order to help someone who had come from a different country.
The children have enjoyed using drama during Refugee Week, which has enhanced their understanding of the difficultieis experienced by refugees.
